The New Covenant

Q: What is the New Covenant and Why Should I Keep It?

Two thousand years ago, over a period of three years, Jesus Christ preached the gospel and established the New Covenant—the new ways to keep the laws of God such as the Sabbath (Lk 4:16) and the seven feasts in three times. However, shortly after ascending to Heaven, Jesus’ teachings began to be changed.

“I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting the one who called you to live in the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel—which is really no gospel at all. Evidently some people are throwing you into confusion and are trying to pervert the gospel of Christ.”

Just as Apostle Paul described, people changed Christ’s teachings, laws and commands (Acts 20:29–30). The Bible also described these events in the Old Testament.

“He will defy the Most High and oppress the holy people of the Most High. He will try to change their sacred festivals and laws, and they will be placed under his control for a time, times, and half a time.”

Daniel’s prophecy came true after the Apostolic Age when the Roman Empire severely persecuted the Early Church. While emperors Domitian and Nero tried to aggressively stop the spread of Christianity, their persecution caused more conversions to Christianity.
Emperor Constantine took a different approach. He emphasized religious tolerance and halted the persecution of Christians through the A.D. 313 Edict of Milan. After first winning the favor of Christians, he then took steps to align the empire with his personal ideals. In A.D. 321, Constantine made Sunday a holiday—in honor of his favorite deity, the sun god Mithra—and outlawed the Sabbath day. A few years later in A.D. 325, at the Council of Nicaea, he abolished the New Covenant Passover.

With these changes, the New Covenant Jesus established for our salvation and blessings vanished. And for thousands of years, Churches have kept their own regulations, instead of the New Covenant regulations Jesus established.

Fortunately, the Bible said He would appear a second time to bring salvation and reestablish the New Covenant and all its teachings (Heb 9:28).
