On Wednesday, January 29, 2025, nearly 20 law enforcement officers from various agencies gathered at the Church of God in Washington, D.C., for a Law Enforcement Appreciation Dinner. Held in the Capitol Hill neighborhood, the event was organized in honor of National Law Enforcement Day to recognize the tireless work and sacrifices made by first responders every day. The gathering aimed to build stronger community ties and express gratitude to those who dedicate their lives to protecting others.
A Special Evening of Gratitude
Officers from the U.S. Capitol Police Department, D.C. Metropolitan Police Department (MPD), Howard University Department of Public Safety, and American University Police Department attended the dinner. In addition to enjoying a meal prepared by church members, the evening featured a unique Happiness Seminar. The seminar focused on the positive effects of smiling, both on our own wellbeing and in the interactions we have with others. Attendees learned that smiling is not just a result of happiness but can actually create it. This simple act, they were told, can change how we perceive the world around us, build trust in communities, and even lower stress levels.
Words of Appreciation from Community Leaders
U.S. Representative Oye Owolewa and MPD Commander Colin Hall were also present, offering words of gratitude and admiration. They praised the church’s effort in organizing the event and emphasized the significance of community appreciation. The officers were especially moved by the church’s personal involvement; every detail, from the decorations to the meal, was prepared by church members, showing a deep level of care and respect for their service.
The event wrapped up with the officers feeling appreciated and thankful for the recognition. They were reminded that their hard work doesn’t go unnoticed and that the community stands behind them. It was a small but meaningful way to say “thank you” for their dedication and sacrifices.
