Q: Does the Soul Really Exist?
A: Many wonder if the soul truly exists since it cannot be seen or touched. Not only atheists, but even some religious people don’t believe in the soul. For example, the Sadducees during Jesus’ time denied its existence. It’s understandable that it’s difficult to believe in something invisible to the eye. However, many things exist that we cannot see, such as bacteria and viruses — which can only be seen through microscopes. Similarly, the Bible is the spiritual tool God gives to His children, and its purpose is to save the soul.
The Bible contains many teachings about the soul from the very beginning of creation. It explains that the soul is formed from God’s breath of life (Genesis 2:7), that it returns to God after death (Ecclesiastes 12:7), and that we should fear the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell (Matthew 10:28).
The reason many people do not believe in the soul is because they do not believe the Bible. Yet, there are many prophecies and facts in the Bible that prove its truth. For example, the Bible accurately prophesied that the Earth is suspended in space and described the Earth’s core as early as 1500 B.C. (Job 26:7; 28:5).
Just like dragonfly nymphs cannot imagine a world with blue skies and beautiful flowers until they transform, God’s children will experience the wonderful Kingdom of Heaven after this life on Earth. Those who put their confidence only in this world often fear death. King Solomon wisely wrote that the best way to live is by fearing God and keeping His commands (Ecclesiastes 12:9).
